I dressed Raggedy Ann and made her own blankie and one for a youngster. Do you think I could sell her on ebay? I know Donald Trump is gonna be a g'pa in aproximately 3 months and Joy Behar just became a g'ma. (On Raggedy Ann's blankie there is still the writing that the material shouldn't be used on kids sleepware.) New way to get the word out, ey?

    Deirdre

    The trouble you had
    It wasn't so bad
It's only life and what you're livin' for

    Sit down right here
    I'll send away your tears
Well we don't have to talk about it much more

Good things turn bad but it's over now
So don't look sad 'cause you're older now
    Lots of people miss Deirdre

    You're back again
You still have all your friends
And they used to ask me why'd you go away Deirdre

    Oo hoo hooo

    What could I say
    That you ran away
Don't you think it's time that you stayed right near me

These nights, pretty nights, that were meant to be
    With you and me
    It's the way that we
    Always had our love, Deirdre

    I love your red hair

    Deirdre
Do do do do do do
    Dear dear dear Deirdre
    I'm glad you're home again
    Oo ooo ooo

    Ooo hoooo
    Oooo hoooo
    Baby 1 2 3 and you're back with me

    Ooo hooo

    Tomorrow at ten
    I'll wake you and then
We'll take a bath and then I'll laugh again with Deirdre

You may not live with me every day
All that I care is that we find a way
    To stay together with Deirdre

    Deirdre
Do do do do do do
    Dear dear dear Deirdre

Ooo do do do do do do
Ooo do do do do do do

Deirdre (Irish pronunciation: [ˈdʲɛɾˠdʲɾʲə]) or Derdriu is the foremost tragic heroine in Irish mythology and probably its best-known figure in modern times[1]. She is often called "Deirdre of the Sorrows." Her story is part of the Ulster Cycle, the best-known stories of pre-Christian Ireland. Deirdre was the daughter of the royal storyteller Fedlimid mac Daill. Before she was born, Cathbad the chief druid at the court of Conchobar mac Nessa, king of Ulster, prophesied that Fedlimid's daughter would grow up to be very beautiful, but that kings and lords would go to war over her, much blood would be shed because of her, and Ulster's three greatest warriors would be forced into exile for her sake. Hearing this, many urged Fedlimid to kill the baby at birth, but Conchobar, aroused by the description of her future beauty, decided to keep the child for himself. He took Deirdre away from her family and had her brought up in seclusion by Leabharcham, an old woman, and planned to marry her when she was old enough. Deirdre grew up, and one day told Leabharcham that she would love a man with hair the color of the raven, skin as white as snow, and lips as red as blood. Leabharcham told her she knew of such a man-- Naoise, a handsome young warrior, hunter and singer at Conchobar's court. With the collusion of Leabharcham, Deirdre met Naoise. At first the young man wanted nothing to do with her, because it was known that she was destined for the king. But Deirdre shamed him into eloping with her. Accompanied by his fiercely loyal brothers Ardan and Ainnle, the sons of Uisnech, they fled to Scotland. For a while, they lived a happy life there, hunting and fishing and living in beautiful places; one place associated with them is Loch Etive. But the furious, humiliated Conchobar tracked them down.

    "Deirdre's Lament", drawing by J.H. Bacon, c.1905.
He sent Fergus mac Róich to them with an invitation to return and Fergus's own promise of safe conduct home, but on the way back to Emain Macha Fergus was waylaid by the king's plan, forced by his personal geis (an obligation) to accept an invitation to a feast. Fergus sent Deirdre and the sons of Uisnech on to Emain Macha with his son to protect them. After they had arrived, Conchobar sent Leabharcham to spy on Deirdre, to see if she had lost her beauty. Leabharcham, trying to protect Deirdre, told the king that Deirdre had lost all her beauty. Mistrustful, Conchobar then sent another spy, Gelbann[2], who managed to catch a glimpse of Deirdre but was seen by Naoise, who threw a gold chess piece at him and put out his eye. The spy managed to get back to Conchobar, and told him that Deirdre was as beautiful as ever. Conchobar called his warriors to attack the Red Branch house where Deirdre and the sons of Uisnech were lodging. Naoise and his brothers fought valiantly, aided by a few Red Branch warriors, before Conchobar evoked their oath of loyalty to him and had Deirdre dragged to his side. At this point, Éogan mac Durthacht threw a spear, killing Naoise, and his brothers were killed shortly after. There are other versions of the death of Naoise. Fergus and his men arrived after the battle. Fergus was outraged by this betrayal of his word, and went into exile in Connacht. He later fought against Ulster for Ailill and Medb in the war known as the Táin Bó Cúailnge (the Cattle Raid of Cooley), the Irish Iliad.
After the death of Naoise, Conchobar took Deirdre as his wife. After a year, angered by Deirdre's continuing coldness, Conchobar asked her whom in the world she hated the most, besides himself. She answered "Éogan mac Durthacht," the man who'd murdered Naoise. Conchobar said that he would give her to Éogan. As she was being taken to Éogan, Conchobar taunted her, saying she looked like a ewe between two rams. At this, Deirdre threw herself from the chariot, dashing her head to pieces against a rock. In some versions of the story, she died of grief.
There are at least five plays based on Deirdre's story: George William Russell's Deirdre (1902), William Butler Yeats' Deirdre (1907), J.M. Synge's Deirdre of the Sorrows (1910), John Coulter's (playwright) Deirdre of the Sorrows: An Ancient and Noble Tale Retold by John Coulter for Music By Healey Willian (1944), and Vincent Woods' A Cry from Heaven (2005). There are also three books: Deirdre (1923) by James Stephens, The Celts (1988) by Elona Malterre, and "The Swan Maiden" by Jules Watson.
The Deirdre (P20), a ship in the Irish Naval Service (now decommissioned), was named after her.

    Wanderer lyrics
I went out walking through streets paved with gold
Lifted some stones - saw the skin and bones
Of a city without a soul
I went out walking under an atomic sky
Where the ground won't turn and the rain it burns
Like the tears when I said goodbye
    Yeah, I went with nothing
Nothing but the thought of you
    I went wandering

I went drifting through the capitals of tin
Where men can't walk or freely talk
And sons turn their fathers in
I stopped outside a church house
Where the citizens like to sit
They say they want the kingdom
But they don't want God in it

I went out riding down that old eight-lane
I passed by a thousand signs
    Looking for my own name

    I went with nothing
But the thought you'd be there too
    Looking for you

I went out there in search of experience
To taste and to touch and to feel as much
As a man can before he repents

I went out searching, looking for one good man
A spirit who would not bend or break
Who would sit at his father's right hand
I went out walking with a bible and a gun
The word of God lay heavy on my heart
I was sure I was the one
Now Jesus, don't you wait up
    Jesus, I'll be home soon
Yeah, I went out for the papers
Told her I'd be back by noon

    Yeah I left with nothing
But the thought you'd be there too
    Looking for you

    Yeah, I left with nothing
Nothing but the thought of you
    I went wandering

George Harrison's doctor sued again for wrongful death

Interestingly, Dr. Gilbert Lederman is no stranger to the courts. He was sued by the estate of George Harrison when the doctor was accused of forcing the Beatle's star to autograph a guitar on his deathbed.

“The writing stage was generally horrible,” Harrison said. “But the next record is going to be more optimistic. Like the Bonzo Dog Band says, ‘No matter who you vote for, the government always gets in.’”

    Choose What You’re Watching

    The world continues to dissolve
It’s sad how we just keep devolving
And the smaller it all goes
    All the stranger it’s becoming

The way you’re perceived is regal
On the televisions by the people
You don’t fool us: we think you’re evil
    And your methods are illegal

They control you with your fear
And they fill your eyes with greed
    Then they’re giving you impulses
To buy things that you don’t need

The way you’re perceived is regal
    On televisions by the people
You don’t fool us: we know you’re evil
    And your methods are illegal

They choose what you’re watching and you don’t mind
They choose what you’re watching ‘cause they’re so kind
They choose what you’re watching and you don’t mind
Dunno what you’re watching and you don’t mind

The way you’re perceived is regal
On the televisions by the people
You don’t fool us: we know you’re evil
And your face should be illegal

    Excerpt:
The ambitious new director set out to change that. Lederman forged a close relationship with then–hospital CEO Rick Varone, and, over the next decade, persuaded the administration to buy five linear accelerators, at $1.8 million a pop. In 1991, Lederman became the first doctor in New York to offer brain radiosurgery. Unlike standard radiation treatment, which irradiates a large field around a cancer, exposing healthy tissue to low doses of toxic radiation, radiosurgery is designed to zero in on the tumor. Finely shaped radiation beams are sent into the head from many different directions, with the full dose concentrated where they intersect. The upshot is that larger doses can be trained on the cancer, while healthy tissue is minimally affected. Lederman describes it with an elegantly simple metaphor: “Imagine a plum in a bread box . . . Radiosurgery can hit the plum without attacking the bread box.”

Still, the machines were worth nothing unless they had bodies to aim at, so Lederman started spreading the gospel of radiosurgery, for which he charged about $18,000 per round of treatment. “My feeling was, if you have a new treatment, then people should learn about it,” he says. “We were educating people.” There were radio ads, cable-television spots, Internet advertising, and presentations at the hospital. Lederman also went on tour, traveling to Italy, England, Israel, and many other countries to speak to prospective patients and examine their CT scans on the spot.

    The Pirate Song Lyrics
Oh! I'd like to be a pirate
    A pirate's life for me
    All my friends are pirates
And sail the B. B. sea
    I've got a Jolly Roger
It's black and white and vast
So! Get out of your Skull and Crossbones
And I'll run it up your mast

    With a yo-ho-ho
    And a ha-ha-ha
    And a ye-hee-hee-ha-ha-hum

    And a ya-ha-ha

    I've got a Jolly Roger
It's black and white and vast
So! Get out of your Skull and Crossbones
And I'll run it up your mast

Altogether! I'd like to be a pirate

Cryptomnesia, or subconscious plagiarism, is a side effect of information overload
    BY ROSEMARY BLACK
    DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
    Monday, July 13, 2009
Ever work on a term paper and wind up subconsciously including some of that research word-for-word in your final draft? You may be suffering from cryptomnesia, a form of memory sloppiness that's a lot like plagiarism, experts say.
True plagiarism is when you deliberately pass off someone else's work as your own. But cryptomnesia occurs when you present someone else's work as your own because you honestly cannot remember where you heard or read it, explains University of Nebraska cognitive psychologist Brian Bornstein.
"It's unintentional and people are not even aware of it," he says. "What happens is that we are constantly processing a huge amount of information, but our brains can only retain so much, so our brains prioritize the information and concentrate on only the most important aspects of that information."
Cryptomnesia can result from "memory disruptions and failures," says Sam A. Deadwyler, Ph.D., a neuroscientist at Wake Forest University. "You fail to encode something properly, such as a phone number," he says. "Or you can have the tip of the tongue problems when you know something's there but you can't call it up right then. Difficulties encoding and then trying to retrieve information become more common with age."

Processing large amounts of information may lead our brains to forget exactly… (Chamoun/Getty)
Cryptomnesia is under study at the University of Georgia, where cognitive psychologist Richard L. Marsh has designed models for studying it, according to Newsweek.
One study asked subjects to work with an unseen "partner" (the partner was a computer) to find unique words in a square array of letters. A little while later, Newsweek reported, participants were asked to recall the words that they had personally found and to come up with new words that neither they nor the "partner" had been able to find.
The participants plagiarized their partners about 32 percent of the time when trying to remember their own words and up to 28 percent of the time when they tried to generate previously unidentified words in the puzzle. And many subjects who plagiarized checked off a box saying that they were "positive" that their answers had not been previously provided by their partners.
Just what causes cryptomnesia is a mystery, but one theory blames the faultiness of our "source memory," says Bornstein. "Source memory is remembering the source of the information as opposed to remembering the information itself," he explains. "You remember that Michael Jackson died, but you may not remember whether you first heard it from a friend, or on TV."
And, he notes, our brains may be to blame. "Our brains may simply feel that the source of the information is not as important as the information itself," Bornstein says.

He's So Fine - My Sweet Lord Lawsuit
    Excerpt:
Still, I find it funny that in after purchasing the rights to HSF, Klein offered to sell some of the rights to the song to his former client for $700,000. It is not clear that all rights Klein obtained would have been part of this deal, but Klein did Harrison a big favor, otherwise Harrison would have found himself facing payment of a judgment in the amount of $1.6 million dollars, and would not own the rights to HSF. While the legal expenses in this case are undoubtedly astronomical, Harrison should be able to take some comfort in the fact that Klein has had to pay his own fees, and has nothing to show for it, except a part in, without question, one of the longest running legal battles ever to be litigated in this country.
And there was one other benefit for Harrison; a second hit single entitled "This Song" which chronicled some of the travails of this litigation with lines like "This song has nothing Bright about it", and "as far as I know, don't infringe on anyone's copyright, so . . ." "This Song" wasn't as big a hit as MSL, but the revenue from it should have helped offset the costs of the litigation of the HSF suit.

In January 1970, the Beatles signed a music publishing management contract with ABKCO Industries.[7] At some point after the contract was terminated, ABKCO sued the group, a suit resolved in 1977 when the Beatles paid ABKCO $4.2 million; other ABKCO Beatles-related lawsuits continued for at least a decade.[8]
ABKCO successfully sued The Verve over their song "Bitter Sweet Symphony", which samples an Andrew Loog Oldham Orchestra recording of "The Last Time" by The Rolling Stones.[9]
In July 2008, ABKCO filed a lawsuit against Lil Wayne for copyright infringement and unfair competition, specifically referring to the track "Playing with Fire" on his album Tha Carter III.[10] In the lawsuit, ABKCO claims that the song was obviously derived from The Rolling Stones' "Play with Fire", song that ABKCO owns right to.[10][11] As a result, "Playing with Fire" was removed from the online music tracklists for Tha Carter III.

"Beware of Darkness" is a song by George Harrison that featured on his first post-Beatles album All Things Must Pass. When he was demoing this song for Phil Spector during 1970 he jokingly changed one line of the lyrics to "Beware of ABKCO".[12] This later became the name of a bootleg LP containing the recordings from that session.

    Crippled Inside Lyrics (John Lennon)
You can shine your shoes and wear a suit
You can comb your hair and look quite cute
You can hide your face behind a smile
One thing you can't hide is when you're crippled inside
You can wear a mask and paint your face
You can call yourself the human race
You can wear a collar and a tie
One thing you can't hide is when you're crippled inside
Well, now you know that your cat has nine lives
Nine lives to itself but you only got one
And a dog's life ain't fun, mama take a look outside
You can go to church and sing a hymn
You can judge me by the color of my skin
You can live a lie until you die
One thing you can't hide is when you're crippled inside
Well, now you know that your cat has nine lives
Nine lives to itself but you only got one
And a dog's life ain't fun, mama take a look outside

    History
    Origins
Gruelle created Raggedy Ann for his daughter, Marcella, when she brought him an old hand-made rag doll and he drew a face on it. From his bookshelf, he pulled a book of poems by James Whitcomb Riley, and combined the names of two poems, "The Raggedy Man" and "Little Orphant Annie." He said, "Why don’t we call her Raggedy Ann?" [1]
Marcella died at age 13 after being vaccinated at school for smallpox without her parents' consent. Authorities blamed a heart defect, but her parents blamed the vaccination. Gruelle became an opponent of vaccination, and the Raggedy Ann doll was used as a symbol by the anti-vaccination movement.[2]
Raggedy Ann dolls were originally handmade. Later, PF Volland, a Gruelle book publisher, made the dolls. In 1935 Volland ceased operation and Ann and Andy were made, under Gruelle's permission, by Exposition Dolls and without permission (during legal limbo), Mollye's Dolls, resulting in Gruelle v (Mollye) Goldman

NEW YORK -- Donald Trump became a grandfather over the weekend, 14 months after he became a dad all over again.
The baby girl, Kai Madison, was born to Donald Trump Jr. and his wife, Vanessa, both 29, on Saturday in New York, according to published reports. She weighed 6 pounds, 14 ounces, the reports said.
Donald Trump Jr., right, and his wife Vanessa, arrive for a party following the Golden Globe Awards on Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, in Beverly Hills, Calif. The couple has made his father, real estate mogul and "Apprentice" reality television show star Donald Tump, a grandfather. A baby girl, Kai Madison, was born to the couple, both 29, on Saturday, May 12, 2007, in New York, according to published reports.
Donald Trump Jr. told People magazine from the hospital that he is getting used to the idea of being a father. "Everyone's great," he said.
He said the girl's name comes from her maternal grandfather, a Danish musician.
Kai will get to grow up alongside her uncle Barron, born to her grandfather and his third wife, Melania, in 2006.
The elder Trump told the New York Post that being a granddad was "terrific."
"Well, it's not something I had necessarily in mind, but it feels very nice," he said.

    The Telling of Our Story.........

I don't know how to love him- Helen Reddy

It was time to close the door. I looked after him as he asked me what he should do. I told him to walk away. It was time for him to follow his path and it was time for me to return to my journey.

I closed the door and turned around. The hallway was much longer than I remembered but then again it spanned a 60 year history. I was returning to the past and he was progressing to the future.

Until now it had been a joint venture in the present but it was time now for him to develop new skills and it was time for me to return to the memories to do my part in educating the masses.

As I turned to walk down the hallway, I was aware of all the visions. They were familiar but different somehow. I was to learn how different with each passing moment as 'We the People' had been lied to most of the 60 years.

I remember when we had joined forces some years ago. It was to be a life full of love and sweet times shared. I was of the old school and my robots were put together from used parts. His robots were futureistic.

That above statement in and of itself tells much about us. We were polar opposites in many ways (indeed we were opposites as he was all male and I was all female) and yet in other ways very similar. It was and remains still a unique relationship.

Each footstep took me to new places, even though the places were already visited, my vision now was different. I knew with each scene I would have to research to see if indeed what I was viewing was real or a lie.

I had my own history lived inside of my brain and home and it included my truth but that was mixed in with many things from the outside world that I now needed to explore.

I could revisit stories written in the newspapers with a new eye. It would be up to me what to believe and what to research further for truth.

I took two steps before realizing that the visions on the walls of the hallways were to be represented in cinamatic form. It was to be an exciting venture I decided right away.

The scenes were intermingled chronologically as I guess that's how they were stored in my memory bank.

I remember seeing the USS Liberty and it was only a minute or two after closing the door. I was shocked as I saw vividly what had taken place that day. I could see the planes and the flag. It was so real.

The next few minutes were very frightening as I realized the planes were Israeli planes.

I could see the captain talking on the phone........... I then saw a few of the men taking down the American flag and raising a bigger one. I was astonished and feeling very surreal.

I stepped back and closed my eyes, it was too much to comprehend. I stood there riveted until I opened my eyes once again. The scenery had changed. I was now looking at a movie screen with Sean Connery. It was Goldfinger. (That was the night that my first husband and I were told his father had passed.)

I didn't want to go through that experience again so I shut my eyes and squinted hoping the movie screen would disappear. It did.

I continued walking down the hall quickly and as I did the bits and pieces merged until I found the door I was going to enter. I would return another day to continue my journey.

I opened the door today to the hallway..... The first thing I saw was a newsreel from my high school days.
    ww.youtube.com/watch?v=IC4tpeN6pj4&feature=related
I remember the nightly news back then and it was all about body counts of our guys. It was all about watching it over and over and seeing our kids carried out of the jungle. It was much harder back then watching it all on TV. It was even harder when our hometown newspaper carried the names of kids who had just graduated from high school in the obituaries.

I vividly remember the hundreds of times the TV news showed the JFK assassination. I remember watching over and over the horse with the boot in the stirup backwards. It will forever have a place in my memory as one of the saddest days of my life.

The saturation coverage of the assassination and burial of John F. Kennedy and the startling murder of his alleged assassin Lee Harvey Oswald on live television yielded a shared media experience of astonishing unanimity and unmatched impact, an imbedded cultural memory that as years passed seemed to comprise a collective consciousness for a generation.

Was it all planned? I remember not long before the JFK assassination that our high school had installed an intercom system........ hmmmmmm
    ................ to be continued

Tonight I heard laughter from the neighborhood and the memories came forth in a rush. I closed my eyes and listened and then stepped out into the hallway.

I was pleasantly surprised at the story being played out on the wall. It was me, David, John and Bea. We were at a dinner dance and I was dressed in a pink blouse and a long flowered beautiful skirt. I had on beautiful heels and even if I do say so myself, I looked fine. hee hee.

I remember David opening the door of our new Cadillac and feeling beautiful. My hair looked great with it's hints of blonde and I felt like a princess.  Dave clicked the key chain and the lights went off from a distance.  (OMG, the new technology of 1975)

The dinner, as usual, was steak, salad, bread, and a veggie. There was plenty of wine and the bar was open for all sorts of wonderful, delicious drinks.

John looked great and we talked of their trip to Hawaii. It was fun.

The band was from Lucca's in Madera and as always........ fun was had by all.

Later, she was employed as a hostess for Lucca's Restaurant in Madera. Eva was known to all that knew her as a loving, compassionate, and considerate person who gave so much of herself to others and expected so little in return. Her faith in God and her love for her family were the most important things in her life. She was a loving wife, mom, noni and auntie, and her memory will always be cherished.

I remember the dance with John when he asked me to meet him for lunch in Merced at the Pinecone Inn(Branding Iron). Of course, we were friends and I always enjoyed our times together. This time was to be different as I recognized his true feelings for me. I would later receive a ring and necklace from Hawaii.

I remember the day vividly as there was lots of wine and talk of the day I threw a giant gallon wine bottle across the office.  John laughed and made light of it although he knew of my problems and didn't know how to help.  After all, he was David's partner and he had been the one to invite him to partner with him in business.

I was stopped that night on the way home in my 280Z and told by the sheriff that he would only write me up for 85 MPH cause he would have to take me in if he wrote it any higher.  (The next day when talking to John, he told me I had left out of there in a hurry.  I asked him a question and he told me that I hadn't gone the way I said but the opposite.)  Was alcoholism an option then.........  no matter, I was to find out later that I had a choice and if I made the wrong one in that instant, I wouldn't survive in this world.  (I made the right one and thank God every night for seeing me thru.)

I never suspected what my relationship with John did to his wife. I was to learn many many years later that she had become a closet alcoholic during these years. (After all, we were just friends -in my mind and I was all about me at the time and never considered what was going on w/him.)  He once told me I was the kind of woman man wrote songs about.  OMG!

David and I danced and laughed and socialized with many of the attendees.

Ed and his girl friend showed up late...... hmmmmmm, I wondered how his wife would react to his latest adventure. It was always drama when Ed was involved.

John asked me to dance and it was wonderful. He always looked out for me and when he saw Ed arrive with Linda he knew I would be outraged.

Ed, in his own charismatic way asked me to dance and winked at me when David invited Linda to do the same.

I remember stepping on Ed's toes and he winced but didn't comment. In his usual condescending way, he shared with me his latest escapade at the bank. It was too much and I left him standing on the dance floor.

John walked over and handed me a drink and we laughed at the situation and just as I swallowed the last sip of my drink David walked over and invited Bea to take a whirl on the dance floor. It was a night to behold as the moon was full and the breeze was blowing and the music played softly in the background.

The band took a break and I walked over and talked to the trumpet player as I had gotten to know him on our many trips to Luccas. He handed me a flower and asked if he would see me and Dave soon.

I told him we were planning an outing in two weeks and maybe, if they were playing we'd stop over to the dance floor and kick up our heels. He just laughed and sighed and walked away.

I was getting a bit flushed with all the excitement of the night and with the wine. I sat down at the table and to my surprise my husband joined me.

As the night progressed our table seemed to fill up with friends and as the band began to pack up we said our goodnights and started for the car.

It had been a nice evening and as we walked past the bar, John and Bea walked over and we left together. Ed and Linda came out of the dark and seemed to be rearranging their clothes. John called out to him and tried his damndest to embarass him but Ed never even noticed.

David commented that Ed was a bit tipsy tonight and he mentioned that he saw he and Linda walking out of the ladies room together earlier.

I was embarrassed for Gayle as I knew it humiliated her when Ed flaunted his affairs in public.

After all was said and done it had been a beautiful California night and the party had been fun.

As I watched the cinema shutting down the movie, I smiled to myself and realized it had all been soooooooo real. I cannot for the life of me remember why I had stopped at this particular place to watch tonight but it had been quite the experience reliving that night.

It was indeed better than some of the memories from my past. All of this from hearing laughter in the neighborhood in Colorado with grandkids and all. OMG, what a life I've had.

Turkey bans Blogger.com over copyright spat

A local Turkish court has ordered the popular website Blogger to be blocked in Turkey as a result of a complaint by a Turkish satellite TV company, Digiturk.
The company had complained to Turkish authorities that some Blogger users had been illegally broadcasting some soccer matches using the Google-owned online blogging service.
As a result, a court in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır banned the website from the entire country, which is due to take effect within the next few days unless further legal action is taken to stop it.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the Turkish brodcaster said that it had exhausted all other legal options.
"Digiturk has spent $321 million in order to get the right to broadcast Spor Toto Super League matches. However, matches [whose broadcasting rights] belong to Digiturk and Lig TV are broadcasted by certain websites, disregarding all relevant laws," the company said in its statement.
"Thus, we applied to court to ban these websites, and the court decided to ban access to them, after it was proved that although all legal procedures were conducted, the violations were not stopped."
Google and other Digiturk critics disagree
Google logoBildunterschrift: Großansicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift:  Google called upon Turkey to reconsider the decision to ban Blogger.com from the countryOn Thursday, Google shot back with a statement of its own and said  that the comany was "seriously concerned" about allegations of copyright violations, but noted that banning the entire Blogger service was excessive.
Instead of depriving all content owners from accessing Blogger services, we encourage them to make use of such a process," the California company said in its statement. "In this way, Blogger users from Turkey will be able to benefit from the services while we try to deal with the complaint."
Cyber-activist Yaman Akdeniz told the Hürriyet Daily News, a Turkish newspaper, that there are more than 600,00 bloggers in Turkey using the service.
Other Turkish bloggers and media authorities also quickly condemned the move.
"If two people plan a criminal activity on the phone, should we ban the use of telephones all over the country?" asked Deniz Ergürel, the secretary-general of the Media Association, in an interview with the Hürriyet Daily News.
This is not the first time Turkish courts have been used to implement blanket bans on websites in Turkey. In October 2010, Turkey rescinded a similar two-year-old ban on the website YouTube, which is also owned by Google.

Two dozen children are said to be among the dead after US warplanes reportedly bombed a wedding party in Afghanistan. US military officials said the incident, in which up to 40 civilians were reportedly killed and the bride wounded, was being investigated. The party was taking place close to where Taliban militants took cover.

A US spokesman said that if "innocent people were killed in this operation, we apologise and express our condolences". But the Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, called on the US and its president-elect, Barack Obama, to stop civilian killings.

At least 20 people were killed and more than 60 injured in Afghanistan when a U.S. plane dropped a bomb on a wedding party as celebrants fired into the air, an Afghan defense spokesman said Monday.
Dr. Gulbudin, the Afghan Defense Ministry's chief of staff, said the information came from Afghan defense officials in the central province of Uruzgan. He said the death toll was between 20 and 30.
The Pentagon did not confirm the number of casualties but did say a U.S. aircraft providing ground support to Special Forces dropped an "errant bomb" after coming under anti-aircraft fire. A joint investigation has been launched.

Tapping "Our" Resources: Declining Returns on Fossil Fuel Leases

Tapping "Our" Resources: Declining Returns on Fossil Fuel Leases
A drilling rig at night. (Photo: Lars Christopher Nøttaasen / Flickr)
Right now, the government is looking to offer up federal lands to mine up to 5.8 billion tons of coal, while groups like the American Petroleum Institute are pushing to open the eastern Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean to offshore oil exploration. Proponents say we need to begin leasing these federal lands for mining and drilling immediately to collect revenues for the US Treasury and help secure US energy independence. Seems like a strong argument, but how true is it?
In June 2009, sociologists Bob Gramling and William Freudenburg reported that, since Ronald Reagan's Interior Secretary James Watt moved to area-wide offshore oil and gas leasing in 1983, the US government (that is, all of us) has received steadily declining returns. The federal government leases offshore lands for oil and gas drilling, collecting revenue from both the leases and from royalties. Before Watt's change, the US Geological Survey would conduct resource assessments of the offshore area and a limited number of blocks would be offered up in a competitive bid, often with fixed royalty rates.
After Watt moved to area-wide leasing, however, much larger tracts of land were made available for leasing - so large that soon only huge, transnational oil corporations could conduct the seismic surveys of the areas. This inherent disparity gives those companies insider knowledge - even more knowledge than the federal government itself - when it is time for bidding. After comparing the per-acre leasing data on offshore oil bids before and after the change, Gramling and Freudenburg found that "before area-wide leasing in 1983, 3,520 leases were sold at the $2,224 average rate, while 21,179 were sold from 1983 to 2008 at the $263 rate." In short, the acres leased took off while the money collected sank, without even accounting for inflation. Royalties also decreased, and the US Congress further lowered royalties in 1995 with the Outer Continental Shelf Deep Water Royalty Relief Act, exempting some of the more tenuous offshore operations from paying royalties altogether.
As the Government Accountability Office noted in 2007, total revenues collected by the US federal government for the nation's offshore oil resources is one of the lowest government takes in the world - out of 104 jurisdictions surveyed, only 11 received a smaller portion of oil revenue than the US government.
Interestingly, a similar pattern can be found in the coal industry. The Powder River Basin (PRB) is a region in southeast Montana and northeast Wyoming known for its coal deposits. The region annually produces over 400 million short tons of coal - about 40 percent of the coal produced in the US.
Yet in 1990, the federal government decertified the region as a coal-producing area. The decertification means that rather than requiring the federal government to follow formal leasing procedures, including consideration of environmental and economic impacts and competitive bidding, a looser, "lease by application" process is used. The effect of this process is much like area-wide offshore oil and gas leasing: large coal companies are increasingly designing the lease boundaries in the region where the federal government once did. This pattern gives the companies insider knowledge and the ability to carve out tracts favorable to expanding their existing coal mines, undermining competitive bidding. A 2009 WildEarth Guardians report, "Undermining the Climate," found that in the last 20 years, only three lease sales out of the total 21 in the region had more than one bidder.
The report also found that, as would be expected, the areas with only one bidder were leased at much lower values than those with more than one bidder. The decertification also thwarts the federal government from doing a regional analysis of global warming impacts in the region from mining, and makes coal seem artificially cheap when compared to cleaner energy sources.
Well, it's okay that these companies pay us less for the leases because the extracted energy is for our use, right? Not necessarily. Fossil fuel companies do not have to sell the oil and coal taken within the US back to the US; they are free to sell the resource as they see fit. Oil is sent to and sold on an international market. A ban on exporting national Alaska oil was overturned in 1995. Meanwhile, coal mined in the US is increasingly being exported: in the first six months of 2010, US coal exports to Asia grew nearly 400 percent compared to exports for all of 2009. Coal companies are looking for more ways to ship coal from the PRB, including one that spurred the recent controversy over a new coal export terminal in Washington that would ship five million tons of coal to Asia annually.
In short, fossil fuel companies are getting the right to dig up fossil fuels on federal lands for ever-lower prices, while remaining free to export the resource as they see fit, even to nations they claim should clamp down on greenhouse gas emissions before the US agrees to do so. Large companies like BP and Exxon have been found posting profits overseas to further lower the financial duties owed here, and still, many oil and coal companies want to pass off responsibility for the multiple environmental and health effects associated with mining and drilling to the public, the costs of which become yet another taxpayer subsidy.
So, when proponents of coal mining and oil drilling on federal land say we should tap "our" natural resources for our benefit, whose benefit are they really referring to? Our benefit might better be served through conservation, energy efficiency and investment in new sources of technology and energy.
